Using 500px for improved performance and fixes bugs on Android updates

If you’re into photography, be it at an amateur or professional(-ish) level, you are probably already familiar with 500px, an online photography community launched back in 2009 and currently hosting over six million photos.

The community’s special Android app, made available in Google Play less than two months back, has done a very good job in bringing the website closer to mobile users, but good enough doesn’t seem to be enough for 500px.

You can therefore now download a significantly updated 500px Android app with “improved performance” and several bug fixes. The user interface is as friendly, beautiful and minimalistic as before, the features have not been dramatically changed, but loading photos seems to be actually snappier right now, so overall the update looks like a successful one.

On the other hand, there are a couple of user reviews on Google Play complaining of lagginess, so if you happen to encounter problems with loading photos or any other features, you might not have the hardware requirements to handle the app and website’s visually demanding functions. In fact, the app was designed first and foremost for Android tablets, with just a couple of high-resolution smartphones being (partially) supported right now, like the Galaxy Nexus or HTC’s One X.

Fortunately, although the “five hundred pixels” app for Android seems to be stepping it up, it’s still available for free, so if you like snapping photos in your spare time and you want to find out if you could start make a living out of it, there’s no excuse for not downloading the app from Google Play and trying it out.

Using SkyDrive Explorer for managing Your SkyDrive Files

It seems that everyone’s doing the cloudy thing. I’m talking about the recent trend in storing data, such as pictures, videos, songs, and what-have-you to cloud services such as Apple’s iCloud and Google’s own Google Drive.

Microsoft, not be left behind, also launched its own cloud service named SkyDrive. This means that people who want to safely stash their files in a place that they can access from any location now has a variety of options to choose from. Cloud users can literally access their files not just from their main computers but also them from their laptops, tablets, and their phones.

If you’ve got a Microsoft SkyDrive account, you might have seen the Microsoft client for iOS but strangely not for Android devices. There have been some talks that the Android app for the service is coming soon, who knows when it will officially arrive? Having to wait until you get home to access your SkyDrive files can be frustrating, especially when you need a certain file or a whole bunch of them right now.

Worry not, because one developer has come to Android users. Android SkyDrive Explorer is a simple app that promises to give you a cleaner and simpler Microsoft SkyDrive experience. And, it certainly delivers.

This free ad-free client for Microsoft cloud service, developed by William Killerud, allows you to view photos and listen to music straight from the cloud. You can also easily manage your SkyDrive files with Android SkyDrive Explorer.

Create a folder and move and copy files from and to anywhere on your SkyDrive. If you need a certain file from the cloud, it’s easy to save it on your phone; all you need is one click. If you still need more files, save yourself a lot of time by using Android SkyDrive Explorer’s batch downloading feature.

Uploading content from your phone is easy, too. Hit the Share button on your images or open the app and hit the upload button. For those of you who have multiple files you need to upload, no problem. Android SkyDrive Explorer supports not just batch downloading but uploading as well.

You need to give the app permission to “Access information at all times” for when you auto-login after you’ve signed in. Naturally, you’ll also need to give the “SkyDrive” permission for obvious reasons. It requires Android 2.1 to run, which should not be a problem for most users.

Feedback has generally been positive, with a few users complaining that the app requests for access to their contacts. Other users have also reported that if they browse too far into the folders, Android SkyDrive Explorer experiences force closes. In addition, there is currently no option to preview images before you upload them and it is not possible to flip through photo albums.

If you want to be able to access your SkyDrive account anywhere you are, get Android SkyDrive Explorer today. Listen to music or view images before you download them to your phone or organize your files while you’re on the move. Android SkyDrive Explorer is free and available for download from the Google Play Store.

The app doesn’t have a very fancy and eye-catching interface but it is definitely functional. Try this app and learn to practice the fundamentals of music.

Songs which are sung with piano accompaniment sound really mesmerizing, particularly ballads and mellow rock. However, unlike the case of the guitar, you can’t bring a piano anywhere. But, if there is a virtual guitar for Android, then there is also an app called Perfect Piano which turns your phone into your very own piano that you can bring anywhere.

The app is the ultimate pocket piano giving you the full keyboards of a piano. When you play it, you can choose between the Single Row Mode and Dual Row Mode, according to your preference. Perfect Ear

Being a great singer or a musician doesn’t only require someone to have an amazing voice or quick hands but also an ear that can hear and pinpoint a note that is out of tune. One should have the capability to pay attention even to the softest musical detail. Not all are gifted with such a talent, but it is also a skill which can be learned through practice, and Perfect Ear is the app that can help you out.

The app has exercises and tests such as Interval Comparison, Interval Identification, Interval Singing, Scale Identification, Chord Identification, Chord Inversions, Chord Sequence, and an Absolute Pitch Trainer. Pocket Lint (TomTom for Android) coming soon

Greatly popular automotive navigation systems manufacturer TomTom has had an iOS-special nav app available in Apple’s App Store for almost three years. Unfortunately, the app didn’t make its way to Android devices as well, even though we’ve had numerous promises from TomTom over the last couple of years or so.

Another promise has just been made by the Dutch-based company’s officials in an exclusive talk with the guys at Pocket-lint. According to TomTom co-founder Peter-Frans Pauwels, an exclusive Android app will be launching “fairly soon”.

“Summer season is important for us” said TomTom’s co-founder, adding that he can “confirm the app is real” and that “iOS has been doing really well, so it will be interesting to see how it does on Android.” I don’t know about you, but those statements look to me like a diplomatic way of dodging questions about the repeated release delays of the app, while also saying nothing clear about the possibility of ever seeing the app.

The question that remains, however, is if there’s someone still interested. I mean, Google Maps and Google Navigation have significantly progressed during the past months and now offer offline experiences almost as smooth as TomTom’s. And G Maps is completely free, while TomTom’s iOS app goes for around $50 (and up), making its Android “sibling” very likely to go for at least as much.

What do you guys think? Is TomTom’s possible Android app still something to wait for? Is it too little, too late (and too expensive)?

Have you ever listened to the radio and heard a familiar song? You want to grab a copy of that song but you don’t know the title. If you don’t want that to happen, use the SoundHound app on your Android device. This canine will smell any sound scent to catch the title of unknown songs.

When a familiar song starts to play, just open the app and let it listen to your song. It will then give you the title of what song you are listening to. You can also view the song’s lyrics. For those living in the U.S. and Canada, you get to enjoy the LiveLyrics feature in this app. If you missed the song, you can also hum the melody or sing some lines from that song (make sure you’re right on tune). SoundHound will recognize the sound or lines and will give you the title of that song.

The app’s downside is that it needs an active Internet connection. Nevertheless, this app can be a great app to learn and discover new songs.
