If you thought that the United States Federal Government was the only
one trying to pitch in and sue Apple, along with several book
publishers, for an alleged conspiracy that went against competitive
marketing for ebooks then all you have to do is look north towards
Canada.
A single Canadian lawyer from a province of Canada has jumped the boat
to be the sole representative against the allegedly colluding companies.
While interesting on what his stand will be in the case it is very
contrary to the full-force involvement of the entire US federal
government in their share of their fight.
The whole issue began when the US Federal Government charged the
companies for breaking antitrust laws. As according to the charges,
former Apple CEO Steve Jobs had instigated an agreement with the
publishers to stop competitive ebook marketing so that they could be in
control of the pricing process. This was taken as a move to counteract
Amazon.com and its Kindle ebook reader. Amazon had allowed the writers
to place their own price on their products.
Apple and the publishers had designed a completely new system where they
place a fixed price on ebooks and they earn through a fixed percentage
of the final retail price per book. This meant that they were forcing
their consumers to pay more than what they really should have been
paying for those books.
Over-charging their consumers and breaking several marketing protocols
are the charges that the companies face now. Apple had refused to
negotiate concerning the issue and strongly deny that they had been
conducting illicit marketing tactics to earn higher revenues. Some of
the publishers have come to a court settlement instead.
