Much to everyone’s surprise (and disappointment), Sony just unveiled that “next Xperia” phone teased on Facebook on Monday. The mid-range “miro” is far from the high-end super-phone we’ve been expecting from Sony, but it still looks like a pretty decent and stylish piece of technology.
We unfortunately can’t say the same about the Xperia tipo and tipo dual, a new smartphone duo unveiled by Sony that only has one (tiny) ace up its sleeve. As you probably have figured it out from its name, the tipo dual will come with dual-SIM support, being the first such device manufactured by the Japanese company.
However, the Xperia tipo dual will not allow the using of two SIM cards at the same time and you’ll need to push a special button on the side of the phone to activate one or the other. That pretty much cancels the functionality advantage a device with dual standby might have, so I for one can’t see the point of offering dual-SIM support in the first place.
The tipo dual comes in a version with a single-SIM as well, called simply Xperia tipo, and, as far as we can tell right now, the two share the exact same design, features and tech specs. You can therefore expect both smartphones to fall in the entry-level category once they’ll be released (sometime in Q3, according to official claims).
Powered by 800 MHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processors, the Xperia tipo and tipo dual will be sporting 3.2-inch touchscreens with 480 x 320 pixels resolution and scratch-resistant glass and will be featuring 3.2 MP rear-facing cameras, 2.9 GB of on-board memory, 1,500 mAh batteries, microSD card slots, 3G, Bluetooth, WiFi and GPS.
Although they clearly won’t be “power tools” by any standards, the Xperia tipo and tipo dual should attract some attention with their software and looks. Both phones will run Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box and will come in several elegantly painted models (classic black, classic white, deep red and navy blue), weighing in at just 99.4 grams (3.5 ounces) and measuring 13 mm (0.51 inches) in thickness.
It’s pretty obvious that what will make or break Sony’s Xperia tipo and tipo dual smartphones will be their price tags, which are unfortunately still unknown.
